The Dedeaux Download podcast, part of the Peristyle Podcast family of shows, returns after a lengthy hiatus as the college baseball season approaches. Shotgun Spratling and Jack Smith are back to break down the latest news and developments around the USC baseball program, including the big 'groundbreaking' 'development' on the west side of campus where Dedeaux Field is being torn down and rebuilt, leaving the Trojans without a home field for the 2024 (and likely 2025) seasons.
The podcasting duo look at the different angles of a season on the road and how that will be a major hurdle for a team that had a ton of momentum after an outstanding first season under head coach Andy Stankiewicz. They also take a look back to the 2023 season to assess what went well, where the Trojans are set up for success in 2024 and where they'll have to make improvements in their final Pac-12 season.
USC head coach Andy Stankiewicz then joins the Dedeaux Download to talk about the unique challenges the Trojans will have this season and how his team is approaching it...with an 'open-door policy' (though maybe not the type you are thinking). He also discusses the foundation built last season and how his team can build off of that this year
Stankiewicz provides updates on some potential breakout candidates for the season as well as what newcomers could make an immediate impact and discusses what areas he's still looking to learn more about his team. He is also asked about dual-sport athlete Duce Robinson and where he stands after joining the baseball team in January after a strong freshman campaign with Lincoln Riley and the football team.
Robinson will face some stiff competition for playing time as Stankiewicz is looking forward to having more depth on both sides of the ball, but with that comes a lot of extra decision making that he'll have to do.
