Tom talks about his first experiences with Nick Saban and how he learned about hiring pro-style personnel. Tom knew Saban was ahead of the curve when he saw how he would hire a recruiting staff that worked like an ant colony. Tom notes that Saban knew that just because a kid had offers didn't mean he was great and that he could evaluate players by inviting them to camp before giving an offer. Bo asks tom what it's like being around Nick Saban and he talks about how Saban is actually pretty funny and doesn't implement insane hours like some people say. Tom looks at the relationship between Kirby Smart and Nick Saban and how they both gave each other what they needed. Tom says that the trust Kirby Smart earned from Nick Saban allowed the head coach to evolve on offense while his defense was covered by Kirby. Bo asks Tom if he thinks Nick Saban will come back and Tom talks about how the changing of the college landscape had a lot to do with his retirement. Tom talks about the next possible coach at Alabama and he says his first pick is Dan Lanning from Oregon. Tom says that he would have been more surprised years earlier if Saban had retired but it makes sense now that the game has changed as much as it has.
