Description
Over the past year, the European Union and some of its member states have taken bold steps to recalibrate their strategies in dealing with China. In June, Brussels unveiled its first-ever economic security strategy which, while never mentioning China explicitly, has heavily implied it as the main target. Germany followed in July with its first ever China Strategy, which explicitly focuses on cutting dependency on the Chinese market and restricting sensitive technology transfers to Beijing. In October, the EU launched an anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese electric vehicles and Italy just announced its formal exit from China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
In this episode of Essential Geopolitics, RANE’s Europe Analyst, Matteo Ilardo explores how these moves, from protectionist measures to economic-security adjustments, are shaping Europe’s relations with Beijing.
