Description
Welcome to our new series, Mayhem: The 1970s You Never Knew. Over the next few weeks we will take a journey through what some historians refer to as “The Pivot of Change.” Exploring a bit more than shag carpets and bellbottoms, we will take a closer look at the history of what was happening politically and socially, in a decade rich with groundbreaking advancements, as well as devastating setbacks. In today’s episode, we launch into Apollo 13 and some lesser-known history surrounding the alternate mission that began with the hope of another lunar landing, and swiftly shifted to a mission of safely returning three astronauts back to Earth when time was not on their side. With special guest and Apollo 13 astronaut, Fred Haise, we learn what it was like to return to Earth when the world is watching, with the future of the space program hanging in the balance. Meanwhile, thousands of miles below the Apollo 13 spacecraft, there was an uprising among the nation’s youth, tired of living with the threat of the draft, and fearing for their lives. Little did we know it would result in the death of young college students, and millions of students and faculty joining Kent State University and Jackson State College in solidarity, and in protest.Special thank you to the Special Collections and Archives at Kent State University Libraries for the interviews from the Kent State Shootings Oral History Project.Host and Executive Producer: Sharon McMahonAudio Producer: Jenny SnyderWriters and Researchers: Amy Watkin, Mandy Reid, and Kari AntonThank you to our special guest, Fred Haise, for sharing your time, expertise, and personal experience with our audience.
