The closure was implemented due to the harassment of sea lions by humans. Point La Jolla is known for its sea lion rookery, but the actions of certain individuals were negatively impacting the sea lions and their habitat. The closure was put in place to protect the sea lions and allow them to live undisturbed. To enforce the closure, a gate will be installed, and signs will be posted. Additionally, fireworks will be prohibited in the area. The decision to implement the year-round closure followed months of proposals and discussions. The aim of the closure is to develop a comprehensive coastline management plan that prioritizes the protection of sea lions and other marine life. However, there were opposing views, such as those expressed by Bob Evans, president of the nonprofit La Jolla Parks and Beaches, who argued for the need for an environmental impact report to support any management plans.
