Description

Episode 37 see's legendary boxing promoter Kellie Maloney join The Michael Anthony Show. Having left school at fifteen due to struggles with the at the time misunderstood dyslexia, Kellie was considered destined for failure by the society that surrounded the confused and isolated young boy. Raised by an Irish Catholic family in the working class Peckham, London, the priesthood seemed like Kellie's only chance, until she entered a boxing gym.Beginning to train and then eventually coach, Kellie discovered her vocation in the form of managing and promoting. Through resilience, grit and the aid of charisma, the Milwall diehard secured the services of boxing's "golden goose" in the form of Olympic gold medalist Lennox Lewis. From that moment on, the duo would change world boxing, becoming the sports most formidable partnership, selling out arenas world wide and registering wins against fighters such as Frank Bruno, Shannon Briggs and Evander Holyfield along the way. Lennox was tearing apart the heavyweight division, and Frankie Maloney was pulling the strings.Having achieved a life that would seem an impossibility to most and winning the unwinnable battle, Kellie's real fight was nowhere near over. Frank Maloney was a success story, but for Kellie, also a mythical one. In this open and fascinating interview, Kellie tells us how no money, wealth or adulation came close to the feeling of finally accepting who she was and "correcting the mistake made at birth" that was her male gender. Kellie also touches on a variety of other subjects including coping with the tragic loss of former client and friend Darren Sutherland. The subject of transgender is one that both polarizes and dominates modern society. To hear from somebody that has lived through it whilst operating in such a masculine and somewhat stubborn environment makes for an intriguing listen.Available now on iTunes, Spotify and SoundCloud.Links to all three in bio.Support the show
