Description

The 28th meeting of the United Nations Climate Change Conference is fast approaching. At the end of November, the eyes of the energy world will focus on Dubai, as the Conference of the Parties gets underway. There’s still almost 6 months to go but the discussion around the event is already intense. The choice of venue itself is controversial, with the UAE – as one of the world’s largest oil producers – attracting criticism and scrutiny over its clean energy credentials. COP 27 was widely considered a failure, with many pledges made there still coming to fruition. The war in Ukraine put the global energy system under strain but now prices have stabilized should more action be taken? The issue of climate reparation has also come to the fore again; the aid and investments promised to developing nations by richer countries has not been delivered, as promised way back in Paris in 2015.  Joining host Ed Crooks to explore the upcoming climate talks is Emily Grubert, Associate Professor of Sustainable Energy Policy in the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame. They are joined by Joseph Majkut, Director of the Energy, Security and Climate Change Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.  Together, the gang also discuss the technologies for long duration battery storage. There’s a greatlyincreased need for more solutions to help manage the stability of the grid. At the recent Wood Mackenzie Solar and Energy Storage Summit in San Francisco, Dr Deanna Ahmed from Our Next Energy spoke about the opportunities for storage in the US. She said that there are more than 50 companies looking to double down on long-duration storage, so the suppliers are accelerating growth to keep up with demand. Our batteries currently are capable of meeting demand for EVs and delivering energy for hours or weeks, but what about beyond that? What can we do to improve the resilience of the grid? Follow the show on Twitter – we’re @theenergygang and subscribe so you don’t miss an episode.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
