In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the upcoming draft and one potential draft option in Matvei Michkov. One of the draw backs is that Michkov is signed to a KHL deal through 2025-26, creating an uncertian timeline for when he might be able to actually play for the team that drafts him. According to The Athletic: "On pure talent, he’s arguably the highest-ceiling player in this draft class besides Connor Bedard. The hype around him has been tempered, however, because of some serious question marks. Michkov is signed in the KHL for the next three years, through the 2025-26 season. Scott Wheeler has described Michkov as “without question or hesitation, the best prospect I’ve ever ranked at No. 3 in advance of any draft and the best Russian prospect since Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin back in 2004.”
He is also historically a great hockey player According to The Hockey News: "During his age-16 season at the U-20 level, Michkov exceeded any and all expectations. He set the record for both goals and points for 16-year-olds scoring at the MHL level, with 38 goals and 56 points. His totals topped Nikita Kucherov’s numbers from the 2009-10 season, where he became the first player to score more than 20 goals and record more than 50 points. The Capitals will be lucky to draft him if he's available.
