Description

“Sounder” the 1972 film is set in 1933 during the Great Depression.  The Morgan’s are a family of sharecroppers in Louisiana who face the devastating effects of a scarcity of food.  Director Martin Ritt is masterful in telling this story and it is one of his many excellent films. Arrest, prison time, segregation, unrelenting work demands and low crop prices are all factors for the family.  Through all of this the family shares a strong bound of love and survival to keep their farm.  Together Cicely Tyson as Rebecca Morgan and Paul Winfield as Nathan Lee Morgan are the mother and father of a proud family.  Kevin Hooks as young son David Lee embarks alone on a journey to find Nathan Lee who is serving prison time at a work camp.  David Lee is helped and sheltered by the devoted teacher Camille played by Janet MacLachlan.  Carmen Matthews as neighbor Mrs. Boatwright, Taj Mahal as Ike and a strong cast help shape the story.  James Best as Sheriff Young represents the 1930’s political structure within the Parish.“Sounder” was both a critical and financial success.  It was nominated for these four Academy Awards-Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Writing (Screenplay-based on material from another medium).  The film stands the test of time.Up next we have the first of four musicals "Yankee Doodle Dandy"Here's the IMDB page for "Sounder"Here's a link to "Sounder" on YouTube Here's a link to Cicely Tyson's interview about "Sounder" on YouTube Check us out on Patreon at www.patreon.com/classicmoviereviews for even more content and bonus shows.
