(4/10/23) This week launches earnings seasons, starting with the big banks. Will banks show more stress to come, or were the past events in that sector over with? What about lending standards and loan loss reserves for banks? What are their concerns about delinquencies, which are precursors for a recessionary economy. Earnings for Q1 have dropped significantly since the first quarter of 2022, from a peak of $225 to the current level of $172-share today, lowering the bar for companies. Meanwhile, markets continue to trade in a very defined channel, in a consolidation pattern that is considered bullish despite bad news from banking issues, a weakening economic environment, Fed rate hikes, and concerns over inflation. Markets continue to hold on, even though earnings have been on the decline.
