There are some sports movies that follow the formula. Underdog Cleveland Indians pull an amazing turnaround and upset, win over their fans win over their city and make a run at the title. Teen athlete discovers he's a werewolf, uses the performance enhancing advantage which no one seems to question or have an issue with and in the end just acts like himself to win the game. But just because a formula is used doesn't mean the movie can't be more than the formula. Sometimes the sum of the parts is greater than the whole, and that describes the 1985 movie Vision Quest.
