We discuss how our understanding of eosinophilic esophagitis has evolved over time and the key role the pediatric GI community played in studying this disease. We discuss some of the more challenging aspects of its diagnosis and treatment, including the role of proton pump inhibitors and how to encourage compliance with dietary and pharmacological treatment. We also discuss recent innovations that will address barriers our patients currently face.
