Description

On this episode of the podcast, we had on Amy Jordheim, MPH, NREMT-B and Sally Krasevic, VP of Strategic Marketing from the International Medical Relief (IMR). This episode is long overdue. We recorded this back in August 2019. Enjoy!
IMR provides acute medical and dental care and health education in an urgent care setting.  Physician Assistants are considered providers in their clinics and as a medical provider they will primarily care for their sick patients.  All of their providers also care for well members of the family.  Providers also ensure that their patients receive significant education about their illness or current health.
Their patient load averages 250-350 patients per day.  They see all patients from well to quite sick.  Patients that are too sick for their setting are transported to local hospitals.  Patients with chronic illness (diabetes, hypertension) are provided with a referral to a local provider and education about their illness.  If their condition is very severe, they may receive medication with the referral.
Medical camps are set up in churches, community centers, on the street under tarps, in private homes, or very rarely, in a hospital or rural health center.  They prefer to work directly in the villages or small towns because they want to see sick and well patients to provide health education to as many people as possible.  As a mobile camp, they set up and break down every day.  They will occasionally work for 2 or 3 days in the same location but more frequently work in a different location each day.
You can see a typical day in one of their clinics by visiting here.
