Description

The Canadian government has recently instituted an expansive Medical Assistance in Dying regime (MAID). The usual Left impulse is to accept and respect what people wish to do with their own bodies. Yet, there has been a series of disturbing news reports that trouble that impulse. Many patients are seeking MAID to address poverty, not just illness. Is MAID letting the government off the hook from providing care and social services? Should we respect these choices on harm reduction grounds, even if those choices are severely constrained by the social and political context they find themselves in?

Each week, we interview thinkers about key debates that are relevant to the left. We discuss politics, culture, and intellectual history.
