Bill was the third Black man to play in the NHL behind Willie O’Ree and his former teammate Mike Marson. Riley and Marson were the first two Black men to be teammates in the NHL and the first two to play on the same line.

Riley is also the first African Nova Scotian to play in the NHL, was inducted into Nova Scotia’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.
