Used as protective eyewear that shields our eyes from the sun, or as a fashion statement, sunglasses didn’t start off that way. In 12th century China, the first sunglasses were a crude slab of smoky quartz, but their intended purpose wasn’t to keep the rays out, it was actually a very practical use in the Chinese legal system. What was the purpose of the first ever sunglasses?
