A 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad was not enough to leapfrog the Basques, and so Erik ten Hag’s United face a play-off with Barcelona in February to progress into the Europa League round of 16. Two early goals conceded at Villa Park made it an unsurmountable challenge in the Midlands, and one United were hardly going to live up to anyway. A first defeat in some weeks is a bringing back down to earth. But has it taught us anything new?
