Makoto Shinkai is a name that has become increasingly prevalent over the years and for good reason. After hitting the anime industry in 2007 with his beloved film 5 Centimeters Per Second, he quickly established himself as a director with the ability to combine masterful artistic talent with emotional, bittersweet storytelling.
Seven years later, Makoto releases The Garden of Words, where he honed in on beautiful animation styling and world building, leading to shortly after releasing Your Name - the second-largest grossing domestic film just behind Spirited Away, and the fourth-largest ever, behind Titanic and Frozen.
