Description
Episode 78: William Henry Bury. This week Joannagh takes us back to 1889 for the tale of William Henry Bury.We hear about Bury's tragic childhood, in which he lost both parents at a very young age, was raised by family friends and found employment in a workhouse at age 16.Joannagh tells us of the troubled relationship Bury had with his wife Ellen Elliot, in which he was frequently violent towards her. We also hear how this violence reached a peak after the couple moved to Dundee, Scotland. This set in motion a controversial investigation in which questions were raised about evidence and there may have even been a link to one of the most infamous killers of all time.Case research by Joannagh ShanksProduced by Emma Taylor & Joannagh ShanksEditing by Bonnie BelovedMusic by Tribe of NoiseSources of research:http://williambury.org/https://www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/news/courts/728125/beyond-doubt-was-jack-the-ripper-hanged-in-dundee/https://www.dundee.ac.uk/news/2018/another-chance-for-the-last-man-hanged-in-dundee.phphttps://www.scotsman.com/news/19th-century-wife-killer-william-bury-acquitted-retrial-1432427https://www.thenational.scot/news/15829422.dundee-killer-william-bury-faces-retrial-129-years-hanged/https://www.thenational.scot/news/18703852.back-day-dundees-last-hanging-jack-ripper/https://www.pressreader.com/uk/the-courier-advertiser-fife-edition/20180115/283059824785373https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/education/higher-education/1392935/aberdeen-law-students-will-defend-man-said-to-be-jack-the-ripper/https://www.dundee.ac.uk/stories/william-bury-last-man-hanged-dundeehttps://www.dundee.ac.uk/news/2018/from-cox-to-coccyx--130-years-of-anatomy-in-dundee.php
