Description

What foods work to make an eruv? Not salt and water, and possibly a whole loaf of bread. Why pieces of bread would not be sufficient - because of enmity, no less - seems to be perfectly in line with the cooperative efforts of eruv. Plus: bread that's not fit for a dog, and how today it just might be gourmet. Also: Giving a coin to a shopkeeper to enlist him as proprietor of an eruv becomes a complicated proposition. At least, with regard to eruv techumin. Ownership, taking possession, requires more than handing over money. And then the whole discussion lines up with "zakin le-adam shelo be-fanav" - for the regular homeowners, who are not a shopkeeper. Which answers our questions yesterday... Also, who can be counted for the eruv techumin as "homeowners," rather than a shopkeeper. But even a "kli," a vessel or utensil, would work with a shopkeeper too. Similarly, one who said "make me an eruv" would work with the shopkeeper too. ie - the original case is a problem and wouldn't work without a formal act of acquisition, but there are modifications to the original case that make it effective in establishing an eruv.
