Hello and welcome to Faculty Meetings - The general advice and discussion podcasts from The Rpg Academy. This is Faculty Meeting # 130 where I am joined by Chris Burlew (@Burlew_Chris) from the Redemption Podcast (an excellent Star Wars Actual Play). And we take some time to expound on a recent series of tweets I had sent out about some of my Top DOs and DONTs for improving as a DM/GM.
DOs
1 - Session 0. Here is a link to a full episode we did no just this topic
2 - Setting the Scene
3 - Roll Fewer Skill checks
4 - Talk Less
5 - Let the players describe success and failures.
6 - Pay attention to what the players are doing, it's what they want to do.
7 - Make the cool/ fun stuff just as easy at the regular stuff
8 - Steal the player's ideas
9 - Almost always say yes!
10 - Resource the Table
DONTs
1 - Don't run if you're not up to it.
2 - Don't forget your lines and veils
3 - Don't dictate what a PC feels or does.
4 - Don't try to fix out of game issues with in-game solutions
5 - Don't plan solutions, prep situations.
6 - Don't be afraid to call a time out.
7 - Don't be afraid to let your PCs win easily, sometimes.
8 - Don't be afraid to be up front with your Strengths and Weaknesses
9 - Don't take the game too seriously
10 - Don't have unreasonable expectations.
Comments and Feedback are always welcome.
Thanks!!
~Michael
