I recently spoke to a man who actually said that he hits his wife to “chasten her.” He seemed to be happy about it and he said, “well we are supposed to love our wives as Jesus loves the church and He chastens those He loves.” That made me angry and so sad. I was shocked. I know he is misusing scripture for his purpose, maybe something is wrong with him. I simply said that if you beat your wife you are not a man or a Christian. What do you say to such a “man”? 4. My friend’s husband is verbally and mentally abusive. I think the Bible speaks of adultery as being the only grounds for divorce so how can I help her? She has spoken with our pastor and he told her “remember your vows” and I do understand that, but I feel it’s abuse even if it isn’t physical and I’m worried for her. 5.
