Description

Hind Makki discusses all-male panels and additional exclusionary practices that marginalize Muslimahs, both in the audience and in expert spaces, at conferences, seminars, and in the masjid space itself! These under-represented panels are hurting our institutions and driving financially independent and Islamically educated women away from the masjid and Islamic organizations. Since many of us had to learn how to live without the masjid during key parts of our worship, are we going to go back if we continue to be under-represented there? Let's discuss the bottom line. For anyone who isn’t Muslim, there are some great breakdowns about Islam in here for you, too.How do you feel when you see all-male panels on parenting?  Links:Find Hind Makki on Twitter: @hindmakkiFind Hind Makki on IG: @sideentranceISNA statement on The Inclusion of Women in Masjids http://dvmcf.net/files/sacredspaces/2016-ISNA%20Statement.pdf   Fatwa by Fiqh Council of North America on women in the masjid: http://fiqhcouncil.org/the-inclusion-of-women-in-masjids/ #MuslimMaleAlliesThe picture that brought international attention on panels: https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/06/28/saudi-arabian-womens-conference-picture_n_3515062.html Side Entrance on Women’s Experiences in the Masjid: https://sideentrance.tumblr.com/aboutHow the pandemic brought Muslim female scholarship forward: https://religionnews.com/2020/05/18/coronavirus-restrictions-on-mosques-bring-women-to-the-fore/ Study on Muslim Prayer Spaces by Sara Abdelghany at Georgetown U: https://repository.library.georgetown.edu/bitstream/handle/10822/1059375/Sara%20Abdelghany%20-%20Making%20Space%20Muslim%20Americans%20and%20Progressive%20Gender%20Activism%20in%20Mosques%20after%209%2011.pdf?sequence=3&isAllowed=y Celebrate Mercy elevating women: https://celebratemercy.com/ ISNA elevating women: https://isna.net/ Women’s Quran recitation at Islah LA on YouTube: https://youtu.be/R7-9wBSdaos Web: www.mommyingwhilemuslim.comEmail: mommyingwhilemuslim@gmSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/mommyingwhilemuslimpodcast)

Mommying While Muslim is a one of a kind podcast where two American born and bred Muslim moms share their experiences to raise second generation kids. Having experienced both pre and post 9/11 America, they're acutely aware of the unique challenges their families face on top of the regular messes that all moms share. Mommying While Muslim is a space to take back their stories, and tell those no one will air on the news or portray fully or fairly in the media.Zaiba Hasan and Uzma Jafri are moms first, careerwomen second, and global citizens at heart. They meet taboo topics head on because they weren't allowed to do it growing up, not at home or at school and work. They aim to better their immediate households, communities, and their momsisterhood the world over by telling the truths sometimes people don't want to face or to hear. Not everyone has the privileges they have, and they are eager to learn more than they are to share their own experiences. Always looking to give back, they find women and families who need a mic because no one needs a voice; they just need an opportunity to speak. Besides tough social issues, they also tackle political ones because when laws affect their kids, they're coming for them as well as the ones who make them! There's no lane that doesn't get taken here.Along the way, they recruit momallies for Muslim Americans who have been inordinately targeted for the last 20 years. True moms know that ALL our children deserve to be safe, loved, and happy, and we bust every yellow brick on the Islamaphobic road to make sure they all are. If you like good trouble, this one's for you!
