The sun is shining, the weather is nice and EVERYBODY is talking about Saparmurat Niyazov, the Soviet-style dictator who ruled Turkmenistan from 1985 until his death in 2006.
During Niyazov’s reign, he ruined the economy, renamed the days of the week after his family members, banned dogs and cigarettes, and generally made life miserable for his subjects. He also tried to build an ice palace in the sweltering desert. This week, Chris, James and Michael take a walk through the streets of old Ashgabat to learn about the self-proclaimed Great Leader of all Turkmen.
