Description

This is part 1 of a 2-part deep dive about the Amazon Prime documentary LuLaRich, a series chronicling the rise and fall of the infamously moldy, egregiously unattractive, paper thin short-lived leggings empire, LuLaRoe. After learning this company is holy in more ways than one, Kate dives into a couple different angles she wanted to elaborate on following watching the documentary, the first being the relationship to her prior series about the "venn diagram" of exploitative sales pitches and how this relates to other predatory practices of self-help/cults/religions/etc. Beyond that, Kate digs a bit more into DeAnne's background, patriarchal influences, estranged sister, and then moves on to try and figure out what was the actual best case earning potential of this “once in a lifetime opportunity.” After that, she uncharacteristically proceeds to do a lot of mental math and walks you through her discoveries as it relates to what she found out that could’ve really gone down with their inventory's demise after going through some of the paperwork related to their cargo shipments. A little heavy, a little light, every Kendall at the Met Gala needs their Kim shadow. Part 2 coming Thursday with Amanda Montell (author of Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism), which will be a more specific discussion about how to spot culty tendencies and avoid getting ourselves involved in a situation that could turn into a slippery, nay, buttery, slope.Buy upcoming Be There in Five Live show tickets here: bethereinfive.com/live-showsBonus episodes like Twilight: A Mormon Allegory? Be There in Five is a pop culture and millennial zeitgeist-focused podcast by Kate Kennedy (entrepreneur, author, pop culture commentator). Long-form and solo hosted, Be There in Five explores different facets of popular culture in a comedic, thoughtful, and analytical way, covering entertainment, social media, bloggers/influencers, and celebrities, in addition to focusing on the humor found in reexamining the 90s/00s as an adult (from AIM to Zenon). As one listener described it, “come for the relatable humor and lighthearted topics, stay for the surprising levels of depth and thoughtfulness injected into them.”
