Description
Who has had a bigger impact on the European influence in the NHL than Hall of Famer Petr Stastny? Seriously, the answer is no one. In this episode, Stastny tells the amazing story of how he, his older brother Anton, and his pregnant wife escaped former communist Czechoslovakia for a better life in North America and to pursue a hockey career in the NHL. The story of how much effort it took to defect will leave you amazed. Eventually, Peter and Anton would be joined by their older brother Marian to form an all Stastny line with the Quebec Nordiques. Peter Stastny would win the Calder Trophy his rookie season as the NHL's rookie of the year. He would score the 2nd most points throughout the entire decade of the 1980s trailing only Wayne Gretzky. Stastny would overcome verbal and physical abuse on the ice but mostly allowed his play to do the talking. In addition to representing his native Czechoslovakia in international hockey competitions, Peter would also go on to play for Slovakia in the Olympics as well as Canada in the 1984 Canada Cup. His two sons, Yan and Paul, both of whom made it to the NHL, have both represented USA hockey internationally. Paul is closing in on 1,000 career games and is an NHL All-Star currently playing with the Vegas Golden Knights. Peter Stastny has a story unlike many in the history of professional sports.
