Description
Cody Garcia was a four-time NCAA Division II All-American and two-time champion at powerhouse Nebraska-Omaha under coach Mike Denney. Garcia, the son of a coach himself, started his career at his alma mater after finishing up with his eligibility in 2009. Most in wrestling know what happened in Omaha at the end of the 2011 season, but Garcia moved on to coach at two NAIA schools in Kansas. His first stop would be Bethany before spending the last seven years leading the Wildcats of Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas.Garcia returns to Division II as the 10th coach at Central Missouri, the same place where his father Mike won an NCAA Division II title in 1982. On Episode 705 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, I talk with Garcia about his path through Omaha, wrestling for Coach Denney at “the other place,” and his return to Division II. Garcia also touches on going into the UNO Hall of Fame despite the school no longer fielding its championship wrestling program and the emotion involving the experience as well as the dynamic of the coaching tree of his college coach impacting the landscape of Division II wrestling in Missouri.
