During the Cold War, the constant threat of a global nuclear conflict was a dark spectre that haunted the heads of the world’s superpowers. Almost every occurrence of objects launched into the atmosphere had to be identified and accounted for. Hundreds of missile tests and satellite launches from both sides of the Iron Curtain were matters of national concern. But it wasn’t until 1978 that the Soviet Union took formal action to investigate UFOs that had been reported all across the country. This decision came on the heels of a spectacular event that occurred in the late summer of the year before. An event that was observed by scores of witnesses across northwestern Russia and as far as Finland. An enormous UFO that seemed to have almost biological properties as it lit up the night sky.
