On this day in 1926, the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History launched Negro History Week, which was later extended to Black History Month. / On this day in 1497, followers of the Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola burned objects thought to incite sin in an event known as the Bonfire of the Vanities.
