Description

The 19th century was a time when the novel came of age. Many of the era’s female novelists responded in powerful and sophisticated ways to the era’s preoccupation with issues of belief and religious practice.

In this lecture, the Reverend Canon Dr Alison Grant Milbank, Associate Professor of Literature and Theology, University of Nottingham, discusses the work of Jane Austen (1775 – 1817).

The lecture draws in part on the collection of essays Anglican Women Novelists: Charlotte Bronte to P.D. James, ed. Judith Maltby and Alison Shell (Bloomsbury, forthcoming 2019).
