Description

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 23, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION There is a long history of using the Bible to further discrimination. During the years of legalized slavery, many Christians used biblical explanations to justify their “right” to own slaves. Today religious freedom is, again, being weaponized as a tool of discrimination and political gain by those who want to deny the rights of LGBT people, women, Muslims, immigrants and others. As All Souls stands firmly on the side of freedom of religion, what do we have to say to those who are using such language in ways that harm others? As we continue to celebrate black history and our theme of “choosing freedom” let’s look to the past to see how we can live more freely and stand on the side of liberty in our own times.
