Description

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 28, 2018, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION I recently heard a story about a Tibetan choir comprised of Buddhist monks. These were all very small men, who wear simple saffron robes and sandals. They appear soft spoken, with shaved heads and bring the scent of sandalwood emanating from the carved beads worn around their necks and wrists. They were coming to chant and sing and have a meal at a maximum security prison here in the US. There was some concerns, on all sides, about whether these mild mannered monks would be able to forge a meaningful connection with the much larger, muscle-bound and diverse population of prisoners. The encounter is instructive for us all regarding how we connect with people who may be very different from ourselves.
