    Introduction

    The wind smelled like salt and sunshine the morning Maya, Tunde, Leila, and Jin reached Shell Bay. Waves fizzed over their toes. Gulls swooped and called. Then a clumsy tangle of seaweed rolled in—carrying something that kicked and clicked.

    Stop! Maya shouted. Inside the loop of a cracked plastic ring, a small crab thrashed. Jin held the seaweed steady. Leila talked softly, like the crab could hear. Tunde ran for the lifeguard, who brought scissors. One careful snip, then another—and the crab scuttled free, leaving a tiny claw print in the wet sand.

    Miss Femi, their science teacher, arrived with a bucket and a worried smile. Loops tighten as animals grow, she said. Every cut can save a life. The kids looked around. Bottle caps, straw wrappers, and shiny pieces of plastic dotted the shore. Jin picked up a bottle with a familiar lion on the label. Their school’s mascot stared back.

    Right then, the friends made a promise: they would become Ocean Helpers, find out where the trash came
