    Introduction

The lunch bell rings, trays clatter, and a mountain of peels and crusts slides toward the trash. Ew! someone says as a banana peel sticks to the side of the can. Flies spin and the air smells sour-sweet like old juice. Four friends—Maya, Theo, Jamal, and Lina—watch the mess and frown. What a waste.

After class, Ms. Green holds up a jar of crumbly, chocolate-brown stuff. Compost, she says, smiling. It smells like a forest after rain. Tiny wiggles and specks move inside. Lunch leftovers can become food for our school garden. With air, water, and time, scraps turn into soil.

Mr. Cruz shows them a sunny corner
