Chapter 1
As the alarm blared, I stirred awake, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. I let out a groan, my head pounding with discomfort. I jumped out of bed a little too quickly, and the pain from yesterday's injuries hit me hard. The cause of yesterday's 'punishment' was the disappearance of Emma's (adoptive parents: Emma and Charles) ring. She swiped a gold ring from a casino. She claimed that I took it - as if I had the audacity to - but of course, I didn't. Yesterday had one silver lining: Charles was absent. Had he been around, my punishment would have stretched on and been far more excruciating.
I got out of bed and headed straight to the bathroom. I took care of my business and freshened up my smile.
Next, it was time to tend to my injuries. I removed my hoodie and gazed at my vibrant torso. A vivid reddish handprint adorned my neck, accompanied by deep blue-black marks on my shoulder. The area around my ribs is adorned with shades of blue, black, red, and purple.
As I glanced over my shoulder, I noticed it was painted in a striking red and.... Bright and cheerful yellow! Oh my gosh, it's infected (my body is truly a vibrant spectrum). I tended to my wounds and treated the infection.
I took two painkillers and swallowed them. I glanced at my phone and noticed the time: 6:02 AM. I had woken up at 5:45 AM.
I hurried to the kitchen to whip up a delicious breakfast for Emma and Charles.
I refrain from calling them mom and dad, as I believe they haven't earned that title.
It seems Charles returned home late last night, as I heard him coming in. It seems he was exceptionally tired, as typically the first thing he does upon arriving home is to beat, kick, and punch me. However, last night was different.
So, I whipped up some breakfast and glanced at my phone—it was Emma's old device. She had tossed it aside after hitting it big with gambling and splurged on a new one, so I decided to make use of it. It was precisely 6:27.
Next, I began tidying up the house. Their directive was clear: the house must shine so brightly that the floors could mirror my unappealing visage. Failure to comply would result in punishment, as if the daily beatings weren't enough.
I began tidying up the living room, kitchen, bathroom, and everything in between. I placed the breakfast on the table. The clock caught my eye, revealing it was 7:30.
Moments later, they emerged from their room. I quickly lowered my head; it was one of their 'rules' to maintain a respectful demeanor. They both took their seats and began to enjoy their meal.
I needed their approval before I could eat.
Once breakfast was over, Emma rose and hurled her plate directly at my head.
What is this nonsense you are serving us?
Emma shouted, her frustration palpable. A sharp pain pierced through my head, and
