The Daring Rescue of Fairy Princess Faye - Gert Basson

    GNOBBIT’S GOOD DEED

Starland is the land where Santa Claus makes all his toys. It’s where Sandman collects all his beautiful dreams, and where the big pot of gold lies buried at the end of the rainbow. It’s also the land where all the fairies and little gnomes live. And it is here that the unhappy gnome, Gnobbit, lives.

Yes, Gnobbit didn’t like the lovely life in Starland at all. He was tired of playing with the other gnomes and fairies. In the evenings, when the fireflies lit up their little lamps to provide light for the fairies and gnomes to hold a concert, Gnobbit would stomp off grumpily. It’s all just a bunch of nonsense, he would say.

Gnobbit really wanted to go across the big lake to the land of the humans. At night, when some of the older gnomes sat chatting on their porches, he would listen with wide eyes to their stories about life in the human world.

Some of them had already been there, and they told stories of tall buildings, cars, airplanes, and trains. And Gnobbit—oh, how terribly he wanted to see all these things for himself. But they told him he was still too young and would have to grow much older before the fairy queen would allow him to leave Starland. Because everyone knows that only older gnomes and fairies are allowed to go to the human world.

That is where they must go to care for sick little animals, and where they paint the plants and flowers when it becomes autumn, winter, spring, and summer. I don’t want to wait until I’m old to see all these things, said Gnobbit. I want to see them NOW! And he stomped off angrily into the field while the other fairies and gnomes played hide-and-seek with the bunnies.
