    Introduction

Have you ever asked yourself what it truly takes to survive against all odds?

Did you know that every year, more than 600,000 people go missing in the United States alone? And yet only 10 to 20% of individuals who are untrained in survival skills can maintain their composure during a survival emergency.

For many, the beautiful wilderness is a distant concept, observed through the lens of comfort from their TV screens or books back home. But it’s a simple fact that nature, with all its enchanting beauty, also demands respect.

Imagine getting lost in a raging snowstorm, twisting your ankle on a hike in the remotest jungle, or finding yourself adrift on a raft in the Pacific Ocean.

Suddenly, the wilderness isn’t so alluring anymore as you find yourself locked in the first battle of your life for survival.

It’s against this backdrop of uncertainty and daunting odds that my own story emerged.

My wife and I were called for missionary service in a remote Papua New Guinean jungle village several years ago. What could have been a few years’ stay developed into a seven-year odyssey. We lived in an off-grid riverside hut, swarmed by relentless mosquitoes, suffocating humidity, sweltering heat, and frequent rain. We were challenged daily to find the best way to survive and thrive.

While we were never stranded, the jungle exposed us to the essence of wilderness survival: Malaria, tropical diseases, building and repairing our shelters, sourcing and purifying water, storing food, fire-making, sanitation, and hands-on first aid in a rainforest with minimal resources became our routine.

When we returned home to Kentucky, we brought with us life lessons and memories we’ll cherish forever, as well as a refined set of survival skills.

However, the point of this book isn’t to spotlight my story. Instead, I want to reveal to you nine riveting accounts of individuals who were truly stranded in the wild and found themselves in even more precarious situations than I did.

Reflecting on my experiences in Papua New Guinea and the numerous hunting and hiking excursions I’ve taken in the mountains and valleys of Kentucky, I’ve often asked myself, What if I get lost and stranded out here? My experiences taught me that survival partially hinges on mindset and reverence for the wild. Nature tests our limits, but it also offers resources for those who work in harmony with it rather than against it.

This book will immerse you in nine accounts of resilient and courageous individuals who persevered and overcame the most incredible survival situations. You’ll meet people like James Riley, who survived slavery, extreme heat, and dehydration after becoming shipwrecked along the Sahara Coast; Ernest Shackleton, who led his crew to survive for several months while stranded in the middle of Antarctica; Salvador Alvarenga, who survived for no less than 438 days while adrift at sea; and several other extraordinary souls who exhibited indomitable spirit at the point when their very lives depended on it.

The purpose of these stories is not only to entertain you but also to educate, inspire, and instill a sense of awe for the human spirit’s capacity to endure and overcome.

If you ever find yourself in a wilderness survival situation, I hope you will reflect on the people in these stories. Knowing they survived the most intense situations against all odds can help encourage us to do the same. We can use the same skills they used to make it out alive!

Ultimately, these stories offer more than just thrills. They also provide insights into the human condition and the power of hope.

    Survival in the Sahara

Northwest Coast of the Sahara Desert, 1815

Northwest Coast of the Sahara Desert, 1815

The world of the early 1800s was vastly different than it is today. Today, we have the luxury of flying supplies and goods via airplanes worldwide in a matter of hours. In the early 1800s, goods and supplies were sent on long voyages via seafaring ships, thousands of which crisscrossed the world’s oceans simultaneously. These voyages took several months to complete and were fraught with danger, including major sea storms and hostile forces in faraway lands.

James Riley was captain of one of these trading ships, the appropriately named Commerce, in service of the United States Merchant Navy. In August 1815, Riley was commanding the ship around the coast of Africa en route back to America with a full load of exotic goods. Little did Riley know at the time that he and his crew would soon become embroiled in the biggest battle for survival of their entire lives.

We know what happened because Riley recounted the events in his 1817 memoir Sufferings in Africa. What follows is a summary of how Riley and his crew told it.

Captain Riley lived in a time when the Age of Exploration was coming to an end. The Age of Exploration is considered to have begun in the late 15th century, and it played a crucial role in shaping the course of history and impacting global trade. By the early 1800s, much of the world had been explored from the initial exploratory voyages, but the routes that were discovered from these voyages continued to influence shipping practices, particularly concerning the transport of goods to and from the United States. At this time, of course, the United States was a nation still in its infancy, struggling to carve out a place
