Introduction to the Book
Welcome to this book designed to help you expand your knowledge and understanding of English vocabulary. My goal is to help you speak and write more fluently. Plus, be able to understand more of what you hear and read.
Let's face it, English can be difficult to master, even for the best students. In this book, you'll find English dialogues, vocabulary words and phrases that are ideal for intermediate level students. The best way to learn new vocabulary is in context. To get the most bang for your buck, be sure to do the following:
− Review frequently.
− Try to use some of the phrases and expressions in real life.
− Don't be nervous about making mistakes. That's how you'll get better at English!
− Consider studying with a friend so you can help each other stay motivated.
− Use a notebook and write down new words, idioms, or expressions, that you run across. Review frequently so that they stay fresh in your mind.
− Be sure to answer the questions at the end of each lesson. I recommend trying to do this from memory. No peeking!
− I recommend doing one lesson a day. This will be more beneficial than finishing the entire book in a week or two.
Unemployment
John: I’ve been reading about the high unemployment rate recently. Do you know what the main causes are?
Sarah: Yes, one big reason is automation. Machines and computers are replacing jobs that people used to do.
John: I also heard that companies are moving their factories to other countries to save money. It’s called outsourcing.
Sarah: Another reason is that sometimes people don’t have the right skills for the jobs available.
John: Economic recessions also cause unemployment. When the economy slows down, many businesses have to reduce their staff.
Vocabulary
automation: The use of machines or technology to do tasks that were previously done by humans.
outsourcing: The practice of moving jobs to another country to reduce costs.
skills: The abilities or knowledge needed to do a particular job.
recession: A period of economic decline where businesses reduce activity and jobs are lost.
Comprehension Questions
What is one reason Sarah gives for the high unemployment rate?
How does outsourcing affect jobs in a country?
What happens to unemployment during an economic recession?

Outsourcing affects jobs by moving factories or jobs to other countries, which can lead to fewer jobs available in the original country.
During an economic recession, unemployment increases because many businesses reduce their staff.
Discussion Questions
What are some ways governments can help reduce unemployment?
How do you think education and training programs can help people find jobs?

Save me a Seat
Jerry and Sid are talking about coming late to class.
Jerry: Hey Sid, can you save me a seat in class? I'm going to come late.
Sid: Take your time. I'll even take notes for you. But, why are you always late?
Jerry: You know the cute girls always catch my eye and then I have to stop and talk. But, keep up the good work
