Privacy Blind Spot
Comedian John Oliver questioned people in Times Square about Edward Snowden two years after Snowden leaked classified National Security Agency documents. Surprisingly, few knew who Snowden was or what he had done. Yet Snowden had exposed the NSA’s data collection practices, which affected nearly everyone in America.
Oliver interviewed Snowden in Russia, where Snowden explained that his goal was to inform the public. Many Americans remain unaware of privacy issues because NSA surveillance feels distant. However, when Oliver mentioned a made-up program that supposedly captured nude images online, people were outraged. Snowden explained that data, even private photos, can be intercepted if it briefly leaves the US due to global server locations.
Despite constant news about data breaches, many people accept surveillance as normal. Personal information is easily accessible online, even for those who think they are invisible.
