    ––––––––

The diner door swung shut behind me, the muffled chatter vanishing like a snuffed candle. My steps dragged as I shuffled onto the sidewalk, a chill creeping beneath my threadbare coat. Exhaustion clung to my bones, heavy as the darkness pressing in from all sides. I felt its weight with each breath, cold and bitter in my lungs.

Just a few more blocks, I muttered, willing my leaden legs to carry me home. The promise of a lumpy mattress had never sounded so alluring. If only I could make it there before sleep overtook me.

Shadows danced at the edges of my vision as I trudged down the empty street, past vacant storefronts and shuttered windows. Weak halos of lamplight littered my path, offering scant reprieve from the gloom. My mind threatened to drift, fatigue smothering alertness with its thick woolen blanket. I pinched my arm, wincing at the sting. Focus, Greta. No nodding off now.

Yet despite my efforts, the day's events swirled through my head in a murky haze. Orders barked, dishes clanging, entitled patrons demanding refills with snapping fingers. The same tedious routine I'd endured for years at that godforsaken diner. When had I become a ghost, drifting through an endless fog? Purpose and direction had long ago slipped through my grasp like wisps of smoke.

As if summoned by my morose thoughts, tendrils of mist began to curl around my ankles, cold and clammy against my skin. I shivered and pulled my coat tighter, breath fogging in the night air. The darkness seemed to pulse, eager to draw me into its depths.

Almost there, I whispered, a frail attempt at reassurance swallowed by the oppressive quiet.

In the distance, my building loomed, a hulking silhouette against the starless sky...

A flicker of movement caught my eye, snapping me out of my reverie. From the depths of a narrow alley, a hooded figure emerged, its form blending seamlessly with the shadows. My breath caught in my throat as the figure moved with unnerving grace, gliding across the pavement like a wraith.

Instinctively, I quickened my pace, heart pounding against my ribcage. The figure matched my speed, closing the distance between us with each stride. Panic clawed at my insides, urging me to run, to scream, to do anything but remain rooted to the spot. Yet my legs refused to cooperate, as if encased in concrete.

The figure drew closer, its movements swift and predatory. Beneath the hood, I caught a glimpse of eyes that glinted with malevolent intent. A scream bubbled up in my throat, but my voice had abandoned me, leaving only a pathetic whimper in its wake.

No, no, no, I chanted under my breath, a futile plea to the uncaring night. This couldn't be happening. Not to me. Not now.

But the figure continued its relentless advance, an unstoppable force fueled by dark purpose. It was close enough now that I could hear its ragged breathing, could smell the acrid stench of sweat and something far more sinister.

My mind reeled, desperately trying to make sense of the situation. Who was this person? What did they want with me? A mugging? Something worse? The possibilities swirled in my head, each more terrifying than the last.

Please, I managed to choke out, my voice barely above a whisper. I don't have anything. Just let me go.

The figure did not respond, did not slow its pace. It was mere feet away now, close enough to touch. Close enough to...

A hand shot out from beneath the folds of the hood, grasping at my arm with a grip like iron. I opened my mouth to scream, but the sound died in my throat as the world tilted and spun around me.

And then, with a violent yank, I was dragged into the waiting darkness of the alley, my fate sealed by the shadows that swallowed me whole.

The alley walls pressed in on me, a suffocating embrace that stole the air from my lungs. Rough brick scraped against my skin as I struggled against my attacker's grip, my feet scrabbling for purchase on the filthy pavement.

Help! I screamed, the word tearing from my throat like a wounded animal. Somebody help me!

But the alley swallowed my cries, the sound echoing off the narrow walls and fading into the oppressive silence of the night. The city's indifference was a palpable thing, a cold and uncaring witness to my plight.

My attacker's grip tightened, fingers digging into my flesh with bruising force. I could feel the heat of their breath on my neck, a sickening warmth that sent shivers down my spine.

No one's coming for you, they whispered, their voice a rasping growl that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once. You're all alone, Greta. Just like you've always been.

The words cut like a knife, a twisted truth that I had spent my entire life trying to outrun. I was alone. I had always been alone. And now, in this moment of ultimate horror, that loneliness was a yawning chasm that threatened to swallow me whole.

Tears streamed down my face as I fought, my nails clawing at the hand that held me, my legs kicking out in a desperate bid for freedom. But it was useless. My strength was nothing compared to the raw, primal power of my attacker.

The walls of the alley seemed to close in around me, the darkness growing deeper with each passing second. I could feel myself slipping away, my mind retreating to some distant place where the horror of this moment couldn't touch me.

And then, with a final, wrenching twist, my attacker spun me around to face them, their hood falling back to reveal a face that would haunt me for the rest of my days.

But that's a story for another time. The police find me in the alleyway, bruised and bloodied, but alive. I don't remember a thing, I tell them. And, for a while, I believe it myself.

But in the dark of night, when the demons creep in, I remember that face. And I know that they're still out there, waiting for me.

The face staring back at me was my own.

In that terrible, frozen moment, I understood the truth. I had been running from myself all this time. The monster that had haunted my dreams and lurked in the shadows of my every waking hour had been inside me all along.

As I looked into my own eyes, I saw the cold, soulless reflection of the person I had become. And in that instant, as my body was violated in the most horrific way imaginable, my spirit shattered into a thousand jagged pieces.

The scream that tore from my lips echoed through the alleyways, bouncing off the damp walls to create a chorus of tormented voices. But no one came. No one ever did.

Because, in the end, we're all alone in the darkness that lives within our own hearts. And as the rain continued to fall, I knew that I would never be free from the monster within.

As I lay there, broken and bleeding, I felt the last vestiges of my humanity slip away. The person I had once been was gone, forever replaced by the monster staring back at me with those soulless, lifeless eyes.

And as the rain mingled with my blood, I finally understood the truth.

There is no escaping the darkness within.

I stared into the cold, dead eyes of my own reflection, my own face twisted in a rictus of cruelty and glee. Surprise, the doppelganger cackled, their laughter echoing off the alley walls. I've been waiting for this day, Greta. The day when you finally faced your true nature.

The realization hit me like a ton of bricks, and I felt my strength leave me. It was me. I had done this to myself. The knowledge was more than I could bear, and I welcomed the darkness as it came rushing in to claim me.

When I awoke, the alley was empty, save for the shredded remains of my dress and the bloodied knife that lay discarded on the ground. My hands shook as I picked it up, its icy coldness seeping into my bones.

The guilt and horror of what I'd done weighed me down as I stumbled toward my car, my
