    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

    A Note to Grown-ups

Hi there! I’m Yaffi —mother, dietitian, and creator of Toddler Test Kitchen™. I never thought I would be teaching kids how to cook. I still remember a time in my life when cooking was a source of stress. Dinner took me two hours to prepare—and it was nothing to look at.

In the kitchen, surrounded by the warm, comforting aromas, you can teach your children who they are: Recreate special family recipes and recount stories from your grandmother’s table. Make new memories and strengthen links to the past at the same time. Stir up some culture by revisiting recipe books specific to your background and history.

By handing over the whisk, you can show your child you have confidence in them. Using this book is the perfect place to begin. These recipes are simple and delicious. They represent all five flavors detected by the human tongue:

    1. Sweet

    2. Salty

    3. Bitter

    4. Sour

    5. Umami (a Japanese word commonly translated as savory)

When eaten together around the dinner table, food serves to bolster the very essence of family: sharing the joy and comfort of a meal, spending time with loved ones, and feeling safe and supported. Who wouldn’t want a bite of that?

Cooking can be fun and educational. It can build self-esteem and increase the chance of a child trying something unfamiliar. As I say at Toddler Test Kitchen™, It’s all about the smile, not the bite.

Cooking is an activity, and, as such, there are some ducks you want to have
