About this ebook

"I am sorry to disappoint you, Mrs. Wilson," I said, " James will be asking me to marry him soon and I plan on saying yes to his proposal and neither you nor anyone else can sabotage our happiness,"
"You must think you have a chance at happiness with my son," Mrs. Wilson sneered, "If you came here to see James, then where is he?"
My heartbeat increased as I stood there utterly confused while trying to grasp, "He wasn't aware I would be here, I came here to pay him a surprise visit so it's understandable if he is not here," I replied quickly.
"How stupid of you to think in that shallow way of yours Ellie, my son will never take you as a wife and that is why I believe he is out to pursue someone worth his time," Mrs. Wilson replied in a quick sharp tone.
"What do you mean by that Mrs. Wilson, what is going on, and where is James?" I asked angrily.
"I'm sorry, Ellie," she uttered in a voice filled with no remorse. "But James is getting engaged... to someone else."

Falling for Her Ex's Enemy - Luna Scribe

    CHAPTER 1 Get Engaged

    Ellie's POV

So, when is the big day with James? one of my friends inquired, curiosity dancing in her gaze.

My face beamed with joy and happiness as I sat amongst my friends while we all had dinner at a trendy restaurant. The soft glow of flickering candles enhanced the joy in my eyes as our laughter filled the air in the room.

My smile widened, a flush of excitement rising in my cheeks as I stroked my hair with my hands.

We want all the tea, Ellie. What's going on with you two? When is the wedding happening? another friend said, throwing it all out on the table.

Oh, James and I have been talking about it, I replied, a hint of anticipation lacing my words. I think he might be proposing soon. I saw a bouquet in the trunk of his car this morning. I said smiling so hard.

My friends erupted in joyous squeals, and with excitement, they all pulled me in for a hug whilst expressing how happy they all were for me.

I have always known James wasn't one to play around, girl you got yourself a gentleman and I am more than happy to see you this happy, Cheers to this new chapter, one friend said raising her wine glass while toasting to my happiness.

Thank you my loves, I am so excited also, I replied, excitement evident on my face.

We chatted all through the dinner, most of the topic was centered around me and James and how far we have come. After a long night, I bid my friends goodbye with promises for a future girls' night.

I have one more stop for the night before heading home and that's James' house. We haven't spoken since I saw him this morning and I think the silent treatment is because of the surprise proposal, maybe so I wouldn't suspect.

My heart somersaulted with anticipation as I made my way to his house. The lights of the city painted streaks of gold against the darkening sky, mirroring the warmth that bloomed in my chest.

James and I have been together since our college days and there wouldn't be anything more fulfilling than getting married to my college sweetheart, that would be a dream come true, and I couldn't be any happier.

Peering up at the familiar porch, I could almost hear the echo of his laughter waiting on the other side of the door.

And then, in the halting moment of a plane skidding off course, James's mother appeared.

And to what do we owe this unpleasant visit? Mrs. Willson inquired as her steps came to a halt.

My lips trembling and my eyes flickering, I mustered the courage to stand with a faint smile on my face.

Good evening, Mrs. Wilson, how delightful it is to see you again, I said taking a few steps closer to her. She stared at me with a grimace on her face.

I know she doesn't like me!!

Spare me the pleasantries, Ellie, she said walking towards the couch at the other edge of the sitting room. She took her seat, relaxing in the comfort of the couch without acknowledging my presence.

With my fist clenched tightly on my dress, I let out a loud sigh before taking my seat on the couch opposite hers. Controlling my emotions was a priority at the moment although I could not stand the attitude of Mrs. Wilson.

I would like to believe you are not here for James, Mrs. Wilson said with a smirk on her face. I hear you are still sticking around my son like a lost puppy and if I am right, I believe I have made it clear that you are not meant for my son. She added.

With all due respect Mrs. Wilson, James and I are in love, we care for each other so much that we wish to spend the rest of our lives together, and all I ask is for your support just this once, I replied.

My hands trembled with anxiety, unsure of what cards she may pull out, I sat there in the silence that consumed the room.

Aw... I am touched by that wonderful speech you gave, I think you deserve a Nobel Prize for that speech, I must say, I haven't heard something that captivating in a while. Mrs. Wilson jested with a grin on her face.

I didn't come here to listen to you laugh about the love I share with your son, you have always disapproved of my relationship,

And I am aware of the fact that you want him to be with someone who suits all your standards and I am sorry I do not fit into your standards, I said in a low soft tone.

Finally we agree on something, I am glad you now understand that you are not a match for my son, Ellie, so the earlier you let him go, the better for you because my son is better off without a girl like you, Mrs. Wilson replied.

Well I am sorry to disappoint you, Mrs. Wilson, James will be asking me to marry him soon and I plan on saying yes to his proposal and neither you nor anyone else can sabotage our happiness, I replied with a teary voice.

The sound of her laughter echoed through the room as the laughter continued for minutes before bringing herself to a stop. You must think you stand a chance at happiness with my son.

If you are here to see James then why isn't he here?

My heartbeat increased as I stood there utterly confused while trying to grasp and understand everything Mrs. Wilson was driving at. He wasn't aware I would be here, I came here to pay him a surprise visit so it's understandable if he is not here, I replied quickly.

How stupid of you to think in that shallow way of yours Ellie, my son will never take you as a wife and that is why I believe he is out to pursue someone worth his time, Mrs. Wilson replied in a quick sharp tone.

What do you mean by that Mrs. Wilson, What is going on, and where is James? I asked angrily.

I'm sorry, Ellie, she uttered in a voice filled with no remorse. But James is getting engaged... to someone else. I'm afraid you mustn't pursue this any further.

    CHAPTER 2 Car Accident

    Ellie's POV

That can't be true, James would not do that to me, I muttered shakily, wanting to be in denial that my supposed boyfriend was getting engaged to someone else and not me.

My heart sank into my chest as I struggled to catch my breath with each step I took, taking to my heels and dashing out of the house with tears rolling down my cheeks.

It wasn't news that Mrs. Wilson has always kicked against our relationship and her words have never been soothing or kind, but she wouldn't stoop so low as to tell a lie to break us both, she isn't one to do something so lame.

    Or is she?

This is not true, James loves me and wouldn't do anything to hurt me, These were the words that kept echoing in my head, as I walked down the lonely path across the streets.

I picked up my phone to call James as he was the only one who could shed more light and tell me the exact truth about what was happening.

The phone rang for a while before he took the call and with eagerness and anticipation, I hoped that he would say something but he didn't.

James, are you there? Can you please talk to me and tell me what your mother said isn't true.

You are not getting engaged to someone else right? It's just one of the mean things she would say to me right? I asked unable to control the tears from rolling down my eyes.

After a long silence, I then realized the bitter truth. James's mother didn't make any of the words she said up, he was getting engaged to someone else. Although it was a hard pill to swallow, that was the truth at the moment, and James' silence confirmed it.

How could you do this to me, James, How could you? After everything we have been through together, I cried, anger and hurt lacing every bit of my words.

Say something and stop being a coward!! I yelled. My heart was pounding hard against my chest while my hands trembled.

I am sorry, Ellie, James said breaking the silence which has been going on for minutes. I am sorry you had to hear it from my mother, I wanted to tell you myself, I had no idea that my mother would do that, James said with a voice filled with remorse.

When exactly were you going to tell me Huh? Maybe after you get married to your new fiancee, maybe then, you will come to me and say this same shit right? I said, lashing out at James.

You need to understand that this has nothing to do with me, I wouldn't do anything to hurt you, Ellie, but right now, my hands are tied.

My father is the mastermind behind this marriage, I never wanted this but right now I do not have a choice but to fulfill my father's wishes James replied.

You do have a Choice James, did we endure all the challenges just to be broken by this?

What happens to all the promises we have made to each other, how happy we are with each other, and you want to throw all that out the window for a reason I know nothing about, I said crying.

I wish I could turn everything around, but I can't. This isn't about us anymore Ellie, if I could, I would be holding your hands and walking you down to the alter with me but all that is nothing but mere wishes that could barely come true at the moment, James replied.

So are you saying you are going to get married while giving up on us, is that it James? Say it, you coward, I said yelling at the top of my voice, tears streaming down my face as I paced around.

I am sorry Ellie, do find it in your heart to forgive me, James said. His voice was laced with sadness and guilt as he continued to speak. I hung up the call feeling heartbroken, I felt like my whole world had crashed before my very eyes.

I cursed James out as I continued to walk down the streets with no destination in mind, I would never have thought that James would betray me and swore never to speak or have anything to do with him ever again.

Tears continued to roll down my eyes as I reminisced about all the memories I had shared with James. He was the only man I had ever known and I had spent the last few years of my life living and loving the same man.

Never in my wildest dream did I think something like this would happen, I know his family was objective towards our relationship but James assured me he would stand by me no matter what.

What a fool I am to have believe whatever comes out the mouth of man.

I knew I was no Cinderella but I had always thought I would have my happy ending with James, I guess for sure there are no happy endings for people like me.

I continued to wander the streets while crying out my heart without minding if anyone was watching, at that moment nothing else mattered to me anymore.

How could you do this James, why did you have to do this to us, today was supposed to be our happy day, I said to myself as I struggled to keep up with my steps as I forged ahead.

At that moment, I could barely see where I was headed and couldn't bring myself to care less, my head was too scrambled, and I was heartbroken to think of anything, I was lost without a purpose.

With the lights shining bright, I stood transfixed, I could barely see what was happening around me, and as the light drew closer, it pierced into my eyes, blurring out my visions while I struggled to see what was happening.

As I opened my eyes, a car was driving towards me at full speed, which made me scream in fear.

    CHAPTER 3 Break Up

    Ellie's POV

The door to the car opened and a man whose face I could barely see came down from the car in a hurry and rushed toward me to check if I was alright.

My hands were trembling and my heart beating hard against my chest as I sat on the floor in shock of narrowly being hit by a car.

Are you okay? he asked leaning closer to me. He knelt before me, examining my body with his eyes, while checking if I got hurt or bruised by the fall.

I looked at him puzzled without saying a word as I was still in shock at what had happened. For a moment I saw life flash right before my very eyes.

He held my hands and helped me from the floor back on my feet. We should head to the hospital at once, he said offering to take me to the hospital.

No, I am fine, there would be no need for that, I responded quickly taking my bag from him.

I can't let you off just like that without taking you to the hospital and making sure you are alright, he replied wearing a look of worry all over his face.

At that moment, all I felt was pain and anguish, not only was I betrayed by the person I loved and trusted most in the world, but I also cheated nature by narrowly escaping death. I felt like the whole universe was against me at that point.

I appreciate the gesture, but I am fine, I said sniffing while trying to keep my tears from dropping.

I am glad you are okay, I would not have forgiven myself if the situation had been any different, He said with a sigh of relief.

So where are you headed? I should give you a ride back home. It's late at night and I can't leave you here all by yourself, not after what just happened, He added.

There is no need for that mister, you don't have to take me home. Thank you for stopping to make sure I am okay and as you can see I am not hurt. I will call a taxi, I replied.

It will put me at ease to know that you got home safely, so I insist on taking you home if you don't mind, he said without giving up.

Without being rude, I have had a very long day, and I am grateful for your offer to take me home but I would prefer to take the taxi if you don't mind, I replied calmly.

No offense taken, I will call you a taxi if that will be the case, He slid his hand into his pocket and brought out his phone before proceeding to order a ride.

We waited for five minutes and my ride finally came, he walked me to the car opened the door for me to get inside, and closed the door afterward.
