Preface
The following quote, attributed to the work of one of history’s greatest thinkers, Albert Einstein, encapsulates the essence of the journey we are about to embark upon together: First, out of clutter lies simplicity. Second, out of chaos comes harmony. Third, in the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.
(Einstein, 2010). Imagine a world where your battles with clutter and chaos are not seen as failures but rather as signposts on your unique journey towards understanding and embracing the way your ADHD mind works.
This book addresses the complexities of maintaining a clean and organized living environment when grappling with ADHD. Our goal is to move beyond the conventional wisdom that often falls flat for those of us who are wired a bit differently and instead explore creative, practical solutions that resonate with your unique way of processing the world.
But first, let me introduce myself: I’m Marlowe, your fellow navigator through the whirlwinds of clutter and chaos. My journey—from being a child whose energy painted every corner of our home with a vibrant touch of chaos, to an adolescent grappling with focus amidst a tornado of interests, to an adult who transformed ADHD traits into organizing strengths—has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride: exciting, terrifying, but ultimately exhilarating. My story is not so usual, but it’s mine, and it’s led me to you.
I remember the countless times I felt the hot sting of frustration as I stood amidst the chaos, wondering why something seemingly so simple felt Herculean. I recall the judgments, both silent and vocalized, from others who couldn’t fathom the tumult—a constant reminder of the glaring disconnect between ‘typical’ brains and my own. It is from these experiences and my search for a solution amongst the chaos that this book was conceived. It aims to empower you—not by changing who you are but by adapting the world around you to work with your unique brain, not against it.
This book is my heart laid bare, a culmination of battles lost and won in the quest to transform ADHD challenges into organizing superpowers. It’s more than a collection of tips; it’s a new lens through which to view your world, a guide to reimagining your space in a way that resonates with your ADHD mind.
So, to you, my fellow adventurers, I extend the most heartfelt invitation. You are not alone in your struggles nor in your quest for a clutter-free life that complements, not conflicts, with your ADHD. This journey is one of discovery, transformation, and above all, empowerment. Your ADHD is not a hindrance but a treasure trove of potential superpowers waiting to be activated.
Let’s embark on this journey together, with a willingness to see not just the mess but also the magic within. With hope, encouragement, and a dash of humor, let’s prove that with the right tools and understanding, we can indeed master our mess and transform our lives.
Introduction
Imagine standing in a room where every surface is littered with unsorted mail, stray laundry, half-finished projects, and random objects that seem to multiply in the blink of an eye. For someone with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), this isn’t just an untidy space; it’s a catalyst for heightened stress and a tangible obstacle to focus and well-being. If you’ve grappled with the perpetual chaos of clutter, you’re acutely aware of how it can derail your thoughts and amplify the challenges of ADHD.
Research has revealed the tangible effect that our environment has on mental health (Woody et al., 2021). For the ADHD brain, an unorganized space isn’t just an inconvenience; it significantly gets in the way of daily functioning. As you peer into the whirlpool of disarray, remember that it’s not an indictment of character but rather a common byproduct of ADHD symptoms that many battle silently every day.
Clutter isn’t just a nuisance; it can have a profound impact on our mental health, especially for individuals with ADHD. Research has shown that clutter contributes to increased stress levels, decreased focus, and a sense of being constantly overwhelmed (neuroscience News, 2023). The clutter in our physical surroundings often mirrors the clutter in our minds, making it even more challenging to stay focused and organized. Researchers also found that for some, clutter contributed to increased production of cortisol, the stress hormone (Lucchesi, 2022).
Recognizing the relationship between external disorder and internal turmoil is your first step towards regaining control. The shame and stress that often accompany ADHD are compounded by clutter, creating a self-perpetuating cycle of disorganization and despair. But there’s good news: With understanding comes the power to change. As we explore this issue, you may experience a sense of hope as you realize that with targeted strategies, you can create a more organized environment.
This book takes an ADHD-centric approach. It merges scientific insights with practical, life-changing strategies, emphasizing personal empowerment over conformity. This book is designed for you—the artist, the innovator, the thinker, who sees the world in vibrant colors yet struggles to find order amid the hues. No prior expertise in organizing is required, just a willingness to view your world through a different lens and the courage to experiment with new methods.
In the pages that follow, you’ll find easy, step-by-step solutions to conquer clutter and minimize the burdens it places on your life. With 101 genius organizing hacks tailored to the ADHD mind, printable checklists, challenges, and workbook-style reflection questions, we aim to declutter the pathways to your potential, as well as decluttering your space. You will be able to take the ADHD Superpowers Quiz (which you can find by going to the QR code at the back of the book), and dive into each chapter, seeing each one not just as a set of instructions but as a map to a more organized, empowered you.
We’re not just tidying up; we’re redefining the way
