Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally - Christine Nwoha

    PART ONE

    DIABETES STRIKES AGAIN

Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. -Proverbs 16:24

    CHAPTER 1

    NOT MY DADDY

"B aby, I’m going to be ok," my dad’s voice cracked coarsely through the phone receiver. Each word was heavy, as if being dragged through gravel. There was something in his tone. Something unsettling... that made my pulse quicken.

I gripped the phone tightly, replaying what he had just informed me moments before. I excused myself from the rounding team and walked out of the patient’s room and to a nearby window. I hid my face, pretending to be interested in outside across the street as I fought to hide my emotional devastation. I had been communicating with my father since that morning. He had just informed me that he was being admitted to the hospital and not only did he have pneumonia, but his kidneys were failing too. Each word he muttered crashed into my ears and made me dizzy. I just wanted to run to my office and pack my things to drive back home to Dallas. How could he be so far away from me right now? How could I be treating other patients when I couldn’t treat my father? I wanted to leave everything behind. Nothing mattered to me if my daddy was going to be sick. My mouth went dry. It never crossed my mind that I would be standing in one hospital, receiving news from my father about his illness in another. I couldn’t stop the tears from welling up in my eyes, so I lifted my head and blinked, pulling them back in. All my training, all my expertise, and I can’t save the one person I wanted to save the most. I couldn’t let him just slip out of my reach.

Should I come? I asked, defeated. I already knew the answer. I didn’t need to wait for it. He said, No. But what he meant was, You worked too hard to get to where you are, and I will not be the one to interfere.

My father was my biggest cheerleader all throughout medical school, and I knew that even if I showed up, he would feel responsible. Even further, deeper down, I knew that leaving this hospital right now was not an option. I was a first-year medical resident. My schedule had little flexibility, and I worked long hours. Though I had dreams of being on my own and calling the shots one day, that day was too far away to think about. I fought all reason. Daddy, please, let me help you…

I know, baby, he breathed. You are helping me by being strong. Whatever will happen, we will get through this and I am going to be ok. I always am.

My father had diabetes for as long as I could remember. I had memories of him bringing home bags of sweets from the nearby grocery. Giant frosted cinnamon rolls, steaming fresh cookies, Hawaiian rolls in the orange plastic bag. My mother would always swiftly collect everything and confiscate what she could before we ripped open the boxes and rushed away with our hands and mouths full. With a mischievous grin, my father would chuckle while wiping the icing from the corner of his mouth. One of my brothers would dance around mockingly, my mother still shaking her head. She was the in-home health police, and my father seemed to saunter through life enjoying sweets as much as he could. A thin and tall man, with the gift of gab. When my mother grew impatient with his nonchalance towards his health, he would tell stories about his youth and the many times he’d escaped death. We, as his children, were wholly impressed. My mother, on the other hand, would roll her eyes exaggeratedly. He could talk his way out of pretty much anything, but he couldn’t convince her to let him eat sweets. She disapproved and nagged him about it constantly. Despite overcoming his addictions to smoking and drinking, he simply couldn’t quit his sweet tooth. He couldn’t overcome diabetes. As a matter of fact, this diabetes was not a concern for him. It was a concept that he hardly spoke of, except when my mother aimed to rob him of his delight. Occasionally, I would ask about his diabetes, but that was maybe yearly. I always assumed he had it controlled. He always looked ok, and it wasn’t a topic that anyone wanted to burden him with.

Today was different. Hearing my father sounding so weak crushed me. It all flooded over me, especially guilt and regret. I was a doctor—why didn’t I prevent this? Were they making the right decisions without me there?

My mother snatched the phone from him and ended my internal unwinding. Her voice was sharp and abrupt. Ada, you have got to talk to him! she exclaimed. He won’t listen to me, but maybe he will listen to you. I have been telling him all these years to watch what he is eating, but he won’t listen. Your father isn’t even taking his insulin like he should. He is always complaining about his stomach hurting. He is not doing well at all!

I knew he was on insulin, but I never asked about his compliance. I didn’t even know exactly what he was on. I felt myself falling and tumbling quickly out of First Daughter Favor.

Daddy, you have to take your insulin as instructed by your doctor, I quipped.

I will, he said in the background. Angrily, my mother cut off the call, and I was left alone in the hospital hallway to think to myself. The hallway felt empty despite nurses bustling in and out of rooms, the large medical teams of doctors striding past me with faces drawn in deep thought, and patients being wheeled to procedures. I caught a glimpse of a woman standing outside a room. Her face was crumpled, cheeks wet with dark makeup smeared downwards from her eyes. She was crying. I lifted my hand to touch the outer corner of my eye. I was crying too.

    CHAPTER 2

    PROVING DOCTORS WRONG

"O k, Daddy, I said, peppered up and pacing around my small apartment living room. With a cup of coffee swinging around in my hand and the phone in the crook of my neck, with my other hand, I was pulling open the blinds to let the sun pour in. The room was full of light. He was finally discharged from the hospital and back at home, and I had my chance to make sure he would get better. I wanted to do everything I could to make sure diabetes did not rob any more years from his life. Diabetes will not defeat my father. We are going to do something BIG!"

What’s that? He was waiting for something wild to come out of my mouth.

We are going to get rid of your diabetes! The phone fell silent. I furrowed my brows and pressed the phone harder to my ear. He was supposed to be excited.

We are going to what? he asked.

Get rid of your diabetes… I repeated.

You can’t just get rid of diabetes, he rebutted. Do you know how long I have had this?

"I know, Daddy, but you can’t just live like
