Chapter 1: The Secrets of Self-Learning

    11

Imagine educational institutions as a giant floating library where books don’t rest on shelves but hover in the air like clouds of knowledge. A student must learn to catch the most important of these clouds to form their own picture of understanding.

At first, it may seem like swimming in a stormy sea of knowledge, with waves of theories and facts swirling around. But just as a skilled navigator studies the stars to chart a proper course, so too must a student learn to navigate this ocean of information. Teachers here play the role of lighthouses, illuminating the way and helping to avoid mistakes in this boundless sea of science.

However, dear reader, we don’t have such privileges and academic support. We must build our own path.

Imagine the internet as an endless ocean of information. Without applying filters, one could drown in the flood of data. For instance, when learning a new topic, it’s important to immediately understand which materials are key. If a student needs to learn a new programming language, they’ll start with the basics, like syntax and fundamental data structures, rather than diving into complex concepts like parallel computing. Self-learning is about setting up a filter to focus on the core concepts and methods.

Instead of lectures and seminars, we will develop our own approach. Just as a good chef must know not only the ingredients but also the technique, so too must a learner be able to apply algorithms in practice, adapting them to their own needs. We will extract the key elements of the learning process and turn them into an effective algorithm for self-development.

An algorithm is a sequence of actions that must be followed to achieve a result. It’s like a recipe in cooking: if followed, it leads to a prepared dish. In our case, it’s a plan that will help you learn something new.

    05

When marathon runners prepare for a race, they create a training program, selecting the most effective methods—interval training, strength exercises, or stretching. To develop a similar plan for learning new skills, we need to understand the algorithm of self-learning, which helps to set goals, choose appropriate strategies, and adapt them during the learning process.

When you’re learning something new, it’s like assembling a complex object from LEGO blocks. First, you build the foundation by studying basic concepts. For example, in mathematics, the basics are addition and subtraction, which gradually form the foundation for more complex topics like algebra or geometry. With each new element, you expand your structure of knowledge.

The learning algorithm is similar to building a house. The foundation is the basic knowledge, like cornerstone blocks that will support the entire building. Without this reliable foundation, the house (or your understanding) might collapse. First, we master the basic concepts—these theoretical bricks will support increasingly complex structures. Only when the foundation is solid can you start building the walls, which represent practical skills and experience.

    07

Think about how you learn to drive a car. At the beginning of your training, you master the basic concepts—how the steering wheel, pedals, and gearbox work. This is your foundation. Once you feel confident handling these elements, you start building your skills further—learning how to park, make turns, and respond to unexpected situations. The same applies to learning: every new skill is built on a solid foundation, and without it, further development becomes impossible.

Just like in construction, if you follow a series of sequential steps, you can build a strong foundation
