Active Learning Strategies - Dr Arundhati Hoskeri
My Journey as a Teacher and Educator
As a child in the seventies, I dreamt of becoming a medical doctor, a common aspiration for many girls of that era. However, my high school grades didn't secure me a free medical seat, leading me to pursue undergraduate studies in Zoology, Botany, and Chemistry. Before my final year results were even out, I was married.
Becoming a teacher was never part of my plan; it happened by accident. Yet today, if you ask me what else I could have become, my answer is unequivocal: nothing but a teacher. My career as an educator has been a source of immense joy and fulfillment.
Teaching has given me immense satisfaction, empowerment, and fulfillment that is unparalleled. When students appreciate, acknowledge, and view you as a mentor contributing to their success, the feeling is overwhelming and cannot be matched by any material riches.
Because I was in the teaching profession, my passion for learning and thirst for knowledge grew stronger with each passing year. After marriage, I completed four post-graduate degrees, a PhD, and a comprehensive course in Natural Health Sciences. I am proud to be in the teaching profession—my journey from a high school teacher to the director and principal of a reputed Cambridge International School is rather fascinating.
However, teaching comes with immense responsibility. Throughout my career, I've taught middle and high school students and counseled thousands of children from pre-school to post-secondary levels as a head of school (principal/director) for over two decades.
To excel in this profession, one needs compassion, excellent subject knowledge, and exceptional skills to impart that knowledge in a way that's easy for students to comprehend.
It's not just about how much a teacher knows; it's about how effectively they convey that knowledge. Teens are often seen as challenging to handle, but my experience with pre-teens and teens has been wonderful. Once they trust you, a deeper connection forms.
Seeing my former students achieve successful careers and acknowledge how I touched their lives during their high school years is profoundly fulfilling.
In my 37 years in education, I've learned that a teacher's age or appearance doesn't matter. What truly counts is how they treat their students and make classroom teaching interesting.
While everyone has a unique teaching style, incorporating various techniques breaks the monotony and helps students grasp subjects faster. When students love a teacher, they often love the subjects taught by them—it's as simple as that.
This book provides a complete roadmap to make classroom teaching effective. To my fellow educators, I wish you the best of luck.
If you find my efforts helpful, please leave a review and rating for my book to encourage other educators to benefit from it.
Thank You!
Dr Arundhati Hoskeri
