WHAT’S INSIDE...
Standing before him was something akin to human form: tall and built like a powerful man at first glance, but something in the shape of the muscles cording the arms and bare chest suggested the whorls of tree growth instead of flesh, all of it covered in skin of a deep, rich green, like the leaves of an ancient oak tree. Actual leaves were threaded through a wild tangle of moss and vines that served as hair, blooming into flowers that trailed over the figure’s broad shoulders.
It fixed him with a look, deep eyes the color of the leaf canopy overhead, and Alleso quaked beneath a gaze that seemed to look straight through him, stripping him to his core. God of the Green,
he breathed, dropping to his knees.
The god’s lips curved into a hint of a smile, revealing teeth that were white and sharp. Rise, Bearer.
Alleso did as instructed, his heart thundering in his chest. He had known the Green Gods dwelled in this place — this Garden of the Altar — but to meet one, to stand before the embodiment of life itself, was more than he could comprehend.
I… I fulfilled my task.
Alleso’s voice trembled slightly despite his best efforts to steady it.
You did,
the god nodded, the mossy vines and flowers of his hair swaying gently with the motion. And you will bring new life to your people.
How may I serve you?
Alleso asked, his throat dry. Will you accept the seeds and bestow your blessings upon them?
The god didn’t respond right away; instead, his gaze traveled the length of Alleso’s body, as if appraising him. I will,
he said at last. My blessing, may the seeds and Bearer both bring life.
