About the Author
CHAPTER ONE
LOOK TO THE SKIES
It is an uninhabited, barren, dry desert region at high noon today in Yucca Flats, Nevada. A lonely cactus creates a human like silhouetted shadow on the dry, cracked ground. The sun brightly shines with a four-pointed star appearance raising temperatures to a record high for 1958.
A tumble weed rolls across the desert land.
A lizard crawls into view, flicking its tongue as if it were counting beats to a song. It stops and looks around to see if there are any changes to his home territory.
Suddenly a bright explosion occurs in the distance horizon. The ground shakes from the loud explosion. Winds of hurricane force blow up gusts of sand that gather the lizard and send it sailing skyward.
The cactus is shredded into pieces and blown away.
A reddish dust fills the sky and blocks out the sun.
A large bright mushroom shaped cloud grows upwards towards the sky.
The super bright explosion on earth’s northern territory
is catapulting reddish-orange particles into space.
A huge, dark, sinister looking MOTHERSHIP enters view and hovers between earth and its moon as the reddish-orange particles shower onto the MOTHERSHIP. Suddenly a very small bright beam of light with a deep roar emerges from the mothership. The beam is targeting the earth.
The beam morphs into a rapidly moving comet with a long thin bright tail trailing. It races from the daylight area into the night side of the earth. Its tail shrinks into a bright sphere as it drops downward into the night section of the North American continent.
It burns through the atmosphere creating small cloud swirls as it pulsates with a reddish glow and then disappears entering a massive cloud.
In the quiet town of SMALLFIELD, all is serene as the sun slowly sets on the town street. Breaking the silence a 1958 red and white Plymouth Fury automobile suddenly speeds around a corner leaning on two side wheels with its tires loudly screeching. The car rounds the corner and lands on all four tires and speeds down the street. The loud music of GOOD GOLLY MISS MOLLY
song by Chuck Berry is heard coming from the car’s radio. Pedestrians crossing the street, jump screaming out of its path as it speeds down the street. The car quickly spins around to make a U
turn with tires loudly screeching and emitting dark burnt rubber smoke.
A teenage girl joyfully leans out the passenger side window laughing as the car continues turning performing a circular turn.
The car races out of the circle turning path and speeds down the street again, as the tires continue screeching. A Dog barks excitedly as the car races pass it. It whips around a corner with tires loudly screeching. A woman cuddles her crying enfant as the car speeds pass them. It turns the corner at the end of the block leaving people standing and lying scattered along the street in shock.
The car screeches to a stop on a barren dead-end road next to a sign that reads LOVERS LOOKOUT LANE
. The town’s night lights are seen in the far background.
The car’s driver is a 19 year-old boy with an 18 year-old girl seated next to him. He is staring at the distant beautiful town lights. She looks at him for a moment. Then sternly speaks.
GIRL
You took long enough to get here. My grandmother drives faster. Next time use all the horsepower that’s under the hood.
She rubs her fingers across the smooth shiny dash of the car.
GIRL
I really like your new car. It’s sooo dreamy.
BOY
Yeaaaa, it’s pretty cool.
He rubs the dash too.
BOY
I call my baby CHRISTINE.
GIRL 4
That’s a cute name. Oh Stephen, you’ve such an imagination.
Suddenly the car’s headlights flash on, then off. Then the radio comes on playing the song CATCH A FALLING STAR
by Perry Como. The couple stares at the radio and then curiously looks around. Seeing nothing they lean into each other and watch the night sky. He turns to her.
BOY
How about a little kiss?
She hesitates a moment while thinking. Then modestly says.
GIRL
Well first, close your eyes.
BOY
Why?
GIRL
‘Cause you’re supposed to close your eyes when you kiss.
He sighs.
BOY
Oh, all right.
He closes his eyes and reaches toward her.
GIRL
Wait, now get ready.
He slightly smiles.
GIRL
Pucker up.
He slightly puckers his lips and has a bigger smile.
GIRL
You better really pucker up for this.
He takes a deep breath, gives a huge smile and strains to make a super big lip pucker.
GIRL
Now, open your eyes.
He opens his eyes and to his surprise she’s offering him a Hershey Candy Kiss.
BOY
What’s this?
She holds the piece of candy up to his lips.
GIRL
You asked for a little kiss. Here’s one for you. If you’re good, there’s more, from where that came from.
He looks surprised and eats the candy.
She lays her head on his shoulder and quietly giggles.
Suddenly, reddish glowing object shots up from the horizon and with a distance roar zooms across the star filled sky. It illuminates the teenagers’ face as they stare in astonishment at this phenomenon. Then it quickly dips into the horizon.
GIRL
Wow! Was that a shooting star?
BOY
Yea, they say if you make a wish when you see one, that it’ll come true.
He looks into her eyes.
BOY
Let’s make a wish.
She hesitates. Then they both close their eyes for a moment. Then coyly look at each other. He gently pulls her ponytail to move her closer to him. He leans nearer to kiss her. She holds back.
Girl
Well, I guess there’s no harm. After all, what could a little kiss lead to, as long as we don’t make out?
She suddenly changes her attitude.
GIRL
So slide over and let’s get started.
They embrace, tighter and tighter and slide down on the car seat.
Girl
Don’t, now stop that! Don’t! Stop it.
It is silent for a moment. Then the boy starts gyrating on top of the girl.
GIRL
Ahhhh, Ahhhhhhhhhh! Don’t stop!
Don’t STOP! Oh! Wait a minute!
The girl pushes the boy from on top of her. She sits up, unbuttons and removes her blouse, then quickly snaps off her bra and plunges down on the car seat. She pulls the boy back on top of her.
GIRL
Where were we? Oh yea.
Ahhhhhhh! Ahhhh! Ohhhhhhh
YES! YES!!, YEEEEES!!!
Moments later the boy sits up, with mangled hair and lipstick smudges on his face, he looks towards the night sky.
BOY
Thank you my lucky star.
The radio begins playing the song One Eyed One Horn Flying Purple People Eater
. The girl’s hand reaches up and pulls him back down on top of her.
Over an Orange grove, a small white glowing dot in the distant night sky, rapidly growing larger until it becomes an out of this world spacecraft. It is rapidly advancing and dropping downward. It loudly slashes off treetops in the orange grove. It continues dropping, loudly uprooting several trees. With an ear-splitting wham, it shovels itself into
