Chapter 1
The examination of honey bees from a scientific perspective.
In the 18th century, European natural philosophers initiated a systematic exploration of bee colonies, unraveling the intriguing and concealed realm of bee biology. Swammerdam, René Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur, Charles Bonnet, and François Huber played pivotal roles as pioneers in this research. Swammerdam and Réaumur were the first to employ a microscope and dissection to delve into the internal biology of honey bees. Réaumur innovatively constructed a glass observation hive to observe hive behavior, discovering queens laying eggs in open cells. However, the fertilization process remained enigmatic, with hypotheses suggesting queens’ self-fertility or a mystical miasma
from drones.
Through keen observation and experimentation, Huber demonstrated that queens are physically inseminated by drones outside hive boundaries. Following Réaumur’s style, Huber utilized enhanced glass-walled observation hives and sectional hives, enabling meticulous inspection of wax combs and enhanced hive activity observation. Despite losing his vision at an early age, Huber, with the assistance of François Burns, conducted extensive studies for over two decades. Huber confirmed a hive’s composition, emphasizing a single queen as the mother of both female workers and male drones. Additionally, he revealed that drone mating occurs at a considerable distance from the hive, high in the air.
In the late 18th century, Thomas Wildman introduced improvements to beekeeping, advocating against the destruction of colonies for honey extraction. He implemented innovations like parallel wooden bars in hives, facilitating comb fixation. Wildman also proposed multi-story hive structures, anticipating modern supers, and emphasized strategic hive management during harvests.
The evolution of hive designs witnessed diverse developments on both sides of the Atlantic. Langstroth’s concept of free comb hives influenced apiarists globally, resulting in various designs like Dadant hives, Langstroth hives, De-Layens trough-hive, and the British National hive. These designs adapted to regional variations influenced by the environment, floral quality, and characteristics of native honey bee subspecies.
Despite regional differences, hive sizes remained comparable, characterized by square or rectangular shapes, compact wooden frames, and essential components like a base, brood cabinet, honey super, crown board, and roof. Traditionally constructed from cedar, oak, or cypress, modern hives now include colonies made from injection-molded dense polystyrene.
In response to challenges like mite pests, contemporary hives incorporate queen excluders and wire mesh-covered floors. Notably, in 2015, Cedar Anderson and his father Stuart Anderson introduced the Flow Hive method in Australia, revolutionizing honey extraction without the need for expensive centrifuge machines.
