About this ebook
Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, now streaming on Netflix, starring Essie Davis as the honourable Phryne Fisher
"An unforgettable character, with a heart as big as her pocketbook, a fine disregard for convention and an insatiable appetite for life." —Denver Post
The fabulous Phryne Fisher, her sister Beth and her faithful maid, Dot, decide that Luna Park is the perfect place for an afternoon of fun and excitement with Phryne's two daughters, Ruth and Jane. But in the dusty dark Ghost Train, amidst the squeals of horror and delight, a mummified bullet-studded corpse falls to the ground in front of them. Phryne Fisher's pleasure trip has definitely become business.
Digging into this longstanding mystery takes her to the country town of Castlemaine where it's soon obvious that someone is trying to muzzle her investigations. With unknown threatening assailants on her path, Phryne seems headed for more trouble than usual....

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A good depiction of life on the Australian gold fields in the 1850s, and the subsequent mystery is well laid out, if hard to believe. Phryne Fisher gets to the bottom of it all with style and grace.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Phryne Fisher has taken her two daughters, Ruth and Jane, her recently arrived sister, Eliza, and her companion, Dot, for a day at Luna Park. Games, rides and fun galore are the activities for the day. That is until a mummified, bullet-marked corpse falls in front of them while riding the Ghost Train. Once more Phryne finds herself on the case. Who is the corpse, where did he come from, how did he died and how did he get here? This was NOT on the day’s activity list.Going to the town of Castlemain on a clue, Phryne finds someone doesn’t want her to solve the mystery of the corpse. Steps are taken to discourage her, but instead she is encouraged to get answers.Along with this, Phryne is dealing with the sudden appearance of her sister, the Hon. Eliza Fisher, who had decided to move to Australia after a falling out with the family. Eliza is not happy — with the climate, the house, the staff, people’s manners, or anything it seems. Something has to be done to get Eliza into a place of her own.Lin Chung, Phryne’s Chinese lover, is dealing with his new position of being the head of the family. His grandmother has stepped down and now Lin is responsible for all aspects of running the family, domestic and business wise. It is something he knew was coming and had been trained for, but it isn’t so simple or easy. There is plenty going on throughout the book. A great escape from the real world!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Back to a more favored status (really, I just don't like reading about sports), this episode in Miss Fisher's exciting life is right after Lin Chueng has returned from adventures in China - and they do get a touch steamy. It's all so understated though, and she is just a hoot - I'd like to have her as a pal.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Phryne Fisher has had her sister descend on her and treat her badly, now she's trying to entertain everyone, so they go to Luna Park to amusements, during a Ghost Train Phryne finds a corpse, disguised, mummified but with a bullet hole. While she starts poking in it, her life, and the life of her household becomes threatened. This doesn't put her off but makes her more determined to investigate.Meanwhile her lover, Lin Chung, is investigating a feud between his family and another Chinese family and finding a mystery that he too has to investigate, both mysteries eventually lead to the same place, Castlemaine. The relationships are interesting and she is so easily smart, but the ending felt anti-climactic. I liked the relationship between Lin Chung's wife and Phryne though.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This episode of Miss Fisher's story is a little disappointing, at least after two very strong entries in the series -- "Away With the Fairies", and "Murder in Montparnasse". Maybe it's unlucky 13, but I found "The Castlemaine Murders" less involving, and the plot less gripping. The side plot about the Chinese in the mid-19th century Gold Rush is interesting, but the story we run into first (featuring the dessicated corpse of cowbow) was less so, for me at least. Still and all, any Phryne is a good mystery.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I think I've had enough of Phyrne Fisher. She's too perfect, too smart, too clever, too progress and gets everyone to fall in line and do as she says. On an outing to an an amusement park, Phyrne and clan discover a mummified body in a tunnel ride. They decide to investigate to find out who the man was. Meanwhile her lover Lin is unraveling a family quarrel over missing gold.
